What is Engineering?

The techy bit: Engineering is the application of mathematics, science, technology, empirical evidence and economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, innovate, design, build, maintain, research, and improve structures, machines, tools, systems, components, materials, and processes. Or to put it another way - Engineering is a very people focused, problem solving, and socially beneficial discipline that involves everything around us that isn't natural. This is why it's such a broad area which offers exciting career opportunities for many different types of people with differing skills.

Creativity, teamwork, challenges and fun are just some of the experiences you can expect to find if you decide to have a career in engineering. Engineering is about creating solutions to problems and thereby help make our world better.

Engineering covers a wide range of activities associated with developing, designing, manufacturing, maintaining and disposing of things used by society. It ranges from everyday things like drawing pins, phones and shoes to items less seen like control valves, hydraulics, electricity generators and water purification plants to cars, aircraft, ships and space craft and everything in between.  It's huge when you think about it. To see the main branches of engineering, how that typically relates to companies and then the island's engineering and manufacturing sector, use the link here.

Here on our island, we have a large engineering and manufacturing sector which contributes to the creation of many items at a global level. The sector is mainly focused on mechanical engineering items such as high value, complex, precision items for aircraft ('aerospace' as it's often called), valves for the oil and gas industries and other precision items for submarines, ships and tanks along with kettles, optical lenses, and graphine powder coatings to name a few. Many of these items are difficult to manufacture due to the exacting standards required in order for them to work safely and reliably.

If you need more information about the sector then use the link here.

"At its heart, engineering is about using science to find creative, practical solutions. It is a noble profession."
